‘Life (like love) is forgiving and hopeful and,
like a bold flower pushing out from the narrow crevice in a rock,
will take any gap we allow.’
Sally Andrew's creative essays (written during the Chinese Year of the Fire Dog) engage emotionally and philosophically with the environmental crisis; her fact sheets provide comprehensive and accessible information on climate problems and solutions; and she presents inspiring examples from around the world of groundbreaking technology, political action and sustainable living. She also includes an educator’s guide. Her stories are alive with fire dogs, singing dogs and sleeping dragons!
‘Now that I know what dogs are, I can begin the job I was given – reading stories to dogs. To open their hearts. Stories that help them to feel and understand, so they can think and act, bark and run together in wild places, bare their teeth and, if necessary, bite. Stories of those fighting, and those licking their wounds. Stories for those who are dog-tired, and want to go for a walk in the fresh air and wag their tails.’
She features cutting-edge renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies, as well as successful examples of climate-friendly actions and life-styles. In her chapter on groundbreaking technology she states:
‘During wartime emergencies, nations have shown they can bypass the red tape, and dramatically and quickly shift production to make weapons of war. We are now under a threat that surpasses all world wars, and we need to produce the tools that can bring the Earth some peace.’
This book is unique in the climate change field because it will help you, the reader, face the climate change issue emotionally, and unusual because it makes complex climate change information accessible to the non-specialist. Few climate change books focus on the emotional and philosophical aspects of the crisis; and make the link between state of mind/heart and ability to act. Although facing up to the severity of the crisis, The Fire Dogs of Climate Change emphasises hope and positive action, through its unique combination of creative stories with practical information.

What people say about The Fire dogs of Climate Change
‘Sally Andrew has written a sublimely beautiful book’
Satish Kumar, editor of Resurgence Magazine
‘Here is a brief series of interwoven stories that tell us in beautiful prose of how we may oppose the madness that the world finds itself in. The style of the author is so easy on the eye and on the soul that you want to just read more and absorb the intrinsic beauty of vision so necessary when we are faced by such a dire crisis.’
Glen Ashton, fire dog, Ekogaia
‘Beautifully written, intenselymoving… It is written with such adepth of commitment, honesty andopenness and wonderful skill that it makes for engrossing, andpersuasive, reading. I suspect this is exactly the sort of book that we should all give our children to read, particularly when they're on the cusp of young adulthood and starting to question some of the quite inexplicable behaviour of their parents that is jeopardising the environmental health of the planet and, by implication, their very future.’
John Yeld, fire dog, the Cape Argus.
‘Captivating reading for all who care about people and our planet: a fabulous book.’
Dr Jim Taylor, fire dog, Director of Environmental Education,
Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa
‘Sally Andrew writes beautiful compelling stories, which I believe should reach as wide an audience as possible.’
Hettie Gets, fire dog,
Manager Conservation Education Programme WWF-SA
‘Written by Sally Andrew, one of a rare breed of red-green colour blind political-cum-environmental activists, this book takes a very different approach to the number one environmental issue of our time – global climate change. Sally Andrew has a way with words. A way that touches the heart with poignancy but also with hope. Each of her stories for firedogs is grounded in experience, given wings by imagination – energised by anger, blessed by love. In these pieces, you taste your individual fear and find your communal courage to run at the enemy and defend what is precious.’
Ally Ashwell, fire dog, Enviro Eds
‘I loved these stories. Although they were about difficult issues, they made me feel peaceful; like it’s all going to be alright.’
Maya Aberman, fire dog ‘Earthlife Africa‘
Fire Dogs is great. It will be especially useful for high schoollearners FET (grades 10-12). It can link up with Life Orientation, English Language and the Life Sciences subjects. This is a lovely book!!! Woof!!’
